Proficiency-level English (C2): free exercises

C2 is near-native mastery: subtle argument, irony, style, rare collocations and fine shades of meaning. These exercises are demanding by design, and every answer carries an explanation that spells out the distinction being tested.

What C2 means

At C2 English holds very few surprises: you follow almost any text or talk, bring information from several sources together into one clear account, and choose words that capture the smallest differences of meaning. Distractors here can only be ruled out by a very strong reader.

What to work on at C2

  • Read the whole text first; at C2 the answer often depends on tone set two sentences earlier.
  • When two options both seem right, the difference is usually connotation or collocation — check both.
  • Keep a record of the distinctions the explanations draw; they recur across exercises.
  • Time yourself: C2 accuracy is expected under exam conditions, not only at leisure.

Practise it the smart way

Each exercise below is marked instantly and every answer carries a short explanation, so a wrong attempt becomes a mini-lesson. Mix the question types: each one trains a different skill at this level.
