About Multiple-Choice Cloze (A, B, C, D)
Multiple-choice cloze is the classic exam vocabulary task: a short text with gaps, and for each gap you choose the one word that fits best from four options. It rewards collocation, phrasal verbs, linking words and the feel for natural English.
What it tests
Each exercise presents a text of around 150–250 words with eight gaps. For every gap four options are offered — three distractors and one correct answer. Distractors are usually plausible words, so you must judge the text as a whole, not just the sentence.
How it appears on the exam paper
In a real upper-intermediate English exam this task is worth one mark per gap, with no penalty for wrong answers — so never leave a gap blank. Timings are tight, so aim to finish this part in about a minute per gap.
Exam-style tips
- Read the whole text once before answering — the first sentence has no gaps and sets the tone.
- Test each option in the gap; three of them will 'clang' against the surrounding words.
- Watch for fixed phrases and dependent prepositions (interested in, capable of).
- If two options look right, re-read the words immediately before and after the gap.
