About Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs — a verb with a particle, like give up, look after or turn down — are everywhere in natural English, and their meaning is rarely the sum of their parts. These exercises train you to pick the one that fits the sentence.

What it tests

Each exercise has eight sentences with a gap and four phrasal verbs to choose from. The options share a verb or a particle (turned down, turned up, turned over, turned in), so only knowing what each one means gets you the answer.

How it appears on the exam paper

Upper-intermediate exams test phrasal verbs across the paper — in the multiple-choice cloze, the open cloze (the particle) and the key word transformations — rather than in a part of their own, so knowing the common ones by meaning pays off in every part.
